Notion Labs was founded in 2013 in San Francisco by Ivan Zhao and Simon Last to build a modular productivity tool combining notes, databases, and project management. The public 1.0 release in 2016, following a full product rebuild in Kyoto, introduced the current logo: a wireframe cube with a serif "N" centred on its front face, designed by co-founder Ivan Zhao. The cube symbolises the product's modular "building blocks" philosophy.
