MasterCard — the logo

Mastercard was founded in 1966 in New York as the Interbank Card Association, a consortium of US banks formed to compete with Bank of America's BankAmericard. In 1968, under the Master Charge name, it introduced its iconic overlapping circles — one red, one orange — whose intersection creates a merged zone. In 2019, Mastercard removed the wordmark from its symbol for most uses, becoming one of the few global logos recognisable without text.
