The Guardian — the logo

The Guardian is a British newspaper founded on 5 May 1821 in Manchester as the Manchester Guardian by cotton merchant John Edward Taylor, in response to conservative coverage of the Peterloo Massacre. The word 'Manchester' was dropped from the title in 1959. In June 2018, upon switching to tabloid format, the masthead was modernised with updated typography and a new bespoke typeface, Guardian Headline.
